Tinubu was my political mentor, he fought for democracy – Seun Kuti

 

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was the political mentor of Grammy-nominated afrobeat musician Seun Kuti.

In a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the late Fela Kuti's son said this when discussing his connection with the president.

He emphasized that the president was a mentor to him as a child and that they have a "robust" relationship. He called the president "uncle."

He remembered that Tinubu was a key figure in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which battled for democracy in Nigeria after the military threw out the Chief MKO Abiola-predicted June 12, 1993 presidential election.

My personal relationship with President Tinubu is quite strong, Kuti said. He was my uncle when I was a child. He was a close buddy of Kuti's uncle Beko. As I was growing up, he served as my political role model.

"These folks taught me as a little child growing up many of the concepts that I understand now. Knowing that they fought alongside NADECO for democracy in this nation even after Tinubu went into exile... These individuals, including Wale Soyinka, Uncle Beko, and Asiwaju, fought for our democracy.

I gave a performance at each of Tinubu's rallies during his first term as governor of Lagos State. He and I have always have a tight relationship. However, I don't interact with him politically at all. Even then, I don't believe it is anyone's concern. Except for when I needed to meet him about international affairs, I hadn't been to his residence in years.

Therefore, the purpose of what individuals are saying is to harm your reputation. They give the impression that everyone must be paid for their opinions. Not at all. The reality is the reality. And I say it without regard to anyone's favor or fear.

But he claimed that President Tinubu has not been doing well thus far.
