On Wednesday, a proposal was considered and adopted in plenary, and a Senate resolution came next.
Sen. Napoleon Bali (PDP-Plateau) was the sponsor of the motion headed "Ghastly murder of a Corps member Chalya Silas in Kaduna State."
In his opening remarks, Bali expressed his sorrow for the horrific death on October 18 of 24-year-old NYSC Corp member Chalya Grace Silas.
He added that during her assignment in Kaduna state, Chalya, an eager NYSC member from the Langtang-North Local Government area of Plateau State, full of life and promise, enthusiastically participated to community development projects.
"Aware that on October 18, while serving in Kaduna State, Chalya, whose father is late and who is her mother's only child, was attacked and fatally stabbed by thugs while going for her daily morning jog."
He expressed worry that her sudden death at the age of 24 highlights Nigeria's security issues.
He claimed that this acts as a stark reminder of the essential need for enhanced security measures to protect the lives and ambitions of all citizens, especially those who are more susceptible than others, such as NYSC members, whose safety has recently been jeopardized by a number of security issues.
He bemoaned the loss her death had caused to her mother, her siblings, and her town.
Following a moment of silence in her honor, the Senate voted on a further resolution that urged the federal government to keep up its tireless efforts to protect the lives of its citizens.
Deputy Senate President Sen. Barau Jibrin, who oversaw plenary, stated the following in his closing remarks:
"Let me thank Senator Napoleon Bali for bringing this motion forward, as the horrific death of a young girl, only 24 years old, is an extremely terrible incident.
"We must stop allowing murders of this nature to occur in our nation.
Therefore, Barau stated, "it is crucial that all of our security agencies fulfill their responsibilities in order to stop this kind of murder from happening on our land in the future."
