On Monday, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) conveyed a note to President Bola Tinubu expressing concern on the lamentable state of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. The message might be characterized as a plea for urgent attention and action.

In a joint statement, Dr. Busari Ademola and Alhaji Jimoh Alao, the Chairmen of the Lagos and Ogun branches of the organisation, expressed their concern regarding the persistently hazardous nature of the 81km federal highway, which poses a significant risk to public safety.

We hereby urge the federal government to reassess the development of the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

The road, initially built over four decades ago under the Muritala-Obasanjo administration, has been a source of great hardship for several road users, as it connects over 200 towns.

The current state of the expressway is a matter of concern, and in light of the restoration of democratic governance in 1999, the populace of our esteemed States continues to question the level of governmental focus directed towards this thoroughfare.

According to the source, the contract for the road restoration was reassigned to construction companies in 2018. However, there has been a lack of noticeable advancement in the project up to the present time.

According to the chairmen's statement, the road conditions along the Ijaiye-Alakuko axis of Lagos, specifically via tollgate, Sango, Ifo, Itori, Papalanto, and Obada near Abeokuta, were characterized by several deep holes, resulting in a distressing and arduous travel experience.

Hence, we urge President Tinubu and the pertinent authorities and agencies to promptly undertake the construction of a feasible, traversable, and secure highway in order to preserve the lives of Nigerian citizens.

We express our shared empathy with the numerous Nigerian individuals who frequently utilize the route, despite its intolerable condition of disrepair.

The statement emphasized the importance of maintaining a sense of optimism, as it asserted that the governments of Lagos and Ogun will inevitably address the dire situation of the expressway by implementing a long-term solution, free from any further political red tape.

According to a report by NAN, the federal government has put out a proposal on August 31st to collaborate with the Ogun State administration in the rehabilitation of the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta expressway.

The suggestion was put out by Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, during a formal visit to Governor Dapo Abiodun at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The minister, accompanied by ministry staff, embarked on a visit to federal roadways within the State.

Governor Umahi, in his response to Governor Abiodun, addressed the issue of frustration faced by Ogun and Lagos States in their attempts to complete road construction projects during President Muhammadu Buhari's administration. He stated that the era of bureaucratic delays in road construction in Nigeria has come to an end.

Umahi emphasized that if the Federal Government seeks the engagement of business entities in road development and management, state governments should not be deprived of a similar opportunity.

He expressed his intention to address the frustration experienced during the process of collaboration between the individual and the Lagos State government in order to assume responsibility for the repair of the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta road. I would like to inform you that it is part of our recently implemented initiative known as the High Way Development Management Initiative. The program in question is a collaborative effort between public and commercial entities.

It is advisable for individuals to adopt a perspective that regards a state as a corporate entity. The minister inquired, "If a state is seeking investors to finance the construction, ownership, maintenance, and tolling of roads, what would be the reasons for not pursuing such an endeavor?"
