In a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Makurdi, SP Sewuese Anene, the command's Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), made this disclosure.
She stated that on Friday, five different bank offices in Otukpo town were attacked by a group of armed robbers in a planned operation.
Access Bank, First Bank, Zenith Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA), and Stanbic IBTC Bank were among the banks named in the PPRO as being affected.
She claimed that at the Otukpo-Taraku route, the command's troops engaged the suspects in a gunfight, neutralizing two of them in the process.
Anne stated that additional criminal gang members left their cars and fled into the woods.
"The suspected robbers were engaged in a gunfight with the Otukpo Divisional Police Officer, CSP John Adikwu and his squad in the region, but they were unable to stop them from hitting the banks.
Later, additional police teams and security personnel were sent to Otukpo to help stabilize the situation and stop the robbers from fleeing.
"Our soldiers subsequently caught up with the bandits along the Otukpo-Taraku road and engaged them in a gunfight.
Two of the robbers were killed during the incident, but other gang members abandoned their cars and ran into the bush.
We're still pursuing them, she said.
Anene stated that during the robbery operation, the alleged offenders killed four police officers.
"Three other police officers including our DPO in Otukpo, who was shot in the stomach, have been confirmed dead at the hospital.
The hospital was also treating other patients who had been hurt during the surgery.
She stated that investigations were still ongoing to identify everyone connected to the criminal crime.
According to NAN, the alleged robbers engaged in criminal activity in the banks for approximately two hours without interruption.
