The decision made by the Kano State administration to eliminate certain explicit and harmful educational materials from the curriculum of public and private primary schools within the state has garnered praise from the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC).

The prohibition was announced by the Kano State government, namely through the office of the Special Advisor on Private and Voluntary Institutions, on the previous Thursday.

The state government, in its official declaration, has identified six textbooks that are deemed unsuitable for instructional purposes. The decision to prohibit certain textbooks is based on the observation that they include improper and sexually explicit content, which is considered detrimental to the moral development of our young student population.

In a statement provided to The Guardian, Malam Hassan Sani Indabawa, the Chairman of the Kano State Chapter of MURIC, expressed his support for the recent decision made by the state government, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, to ban the use of certain inappropriate educational materials within the state. Indabawa believes that this decision is timely and appropriate.

The speaker thus encouraged parents, educators, students, and proponents to adopt and endorse the project in order to address the concerning escalation of immorality among the kids in the region.

The covert incorporation of explicit sexual content inside certain educational materials for basic education was a component of the Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) program devised by the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF) with the aim of globally advocating promiscuity, fornication, and homosexuality. This phenomenon is one of the negative aspects associated with the process of globalization. Undoubtedly, this unfamiliar knowledge presents a conflict with our religious beliefs, societal norms, and core principles.

In addition to the Computer Science Education (CSE) curriculum, it has been observed that numerous textbooks utilized in Nigerian educational institutions have been tainted with inappropriate and indecent material.It is widely recognized among Nigerians that over the past two decades, classical English literature works and novels, such as Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Merchant of Venice, Weep Not Child, Things Fall Apart, The Man Died, African Child, Akin the Drummer Boy, Mine Boy, The Delinquent, and others, have been excluded from our educational curricula. In their place, sex-related local English literature and other science books containing explicit and harmful content have been introduced. These changes have the potential to mislead young students, suggesting that self-control is unnecessary and that engaging in casual sex is pleasurable and acceptable. Furthermore, these materials promote the idea that premarital sex is encouraged, as long as it is "safe" and does not result in pregnancy. In the event of pregnancy, the materials suggest that abortion is a viable option.

As it is commonly acknowledged, a detrimental outcome of this phenomenon is the sexualization of students in both primary and secondary educational settings.

Hence, in order to ensure the successful implementation of the government's direction, it is imperative for the Kano State government to enact relevant legislation that supports the prohibition of offensive textbooks. This legislation would establish a legal foundation for disciplining any school authority that fails to comply with the mandate.

Indabawa urged other state governments to follow the example set by the Kano State government in scrutinizing and eliminating any indecent and harmful instructional materials from their respective basic education curricula.
