LASG closes markets in Mile 12 and Owode
The Lagos State government has taken action to close down the Mile 12 International Market and Owode Onirin Market due to their failure to adhere to environmental regulations.

On Friday, Jubril Gawat, the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, revealed this information on his social media platform.

In accordance with the instructions of the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, enforcement personnel from the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) collaborated in a joint operation on the morning of Friday, October 13. As a result, the Mile 12 International Market and Owode Onirin Market, both located along Ikorodu Road in Kosofe Local Government, were officially closed.

According to Gawat, the rationale behind the closure of the markets is attributed to the indiscriminate disposal and incineration of waste, unsanitary conditions, as well as obstructed and polluted drainage systems.

According to his statement, the closure is also attributed to the issue of unlawful and indiscriminate parking, as well as the abandonment of trucks on key roads, which therefore hinders the smooth movement of traffic.

For a duration exceeding one week, the Lagos State administration has undertaken the closure of several prominent marketplaces due to environmental transgressions.

Several marketplaces that have been closed down include Ladipo, Oyingbo, Alamutu Ologede, and Ile-Epo.

Nevertheless, certain markets have subsequently been reopened following the fulfillment of the necessary conditions.
