According to a statement made by Kolawole Ojelabi, the Consultant of Corporate Communication at the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), it is anticipated that the tracks will be energized by the upcoming Monday. This will enable the deployment of extra train sets to facilitate daily passenger operations.
In anticipation of the forthcoming surge in train travel, it has been determined that railway services will be operational exclusively during the morning peak on Saturday, the 14th of October 2023. However, it should be noted that there will be a suspension of train services throughout the afternoon of Saturday, as well as the entirety of Sunday, the 15th of October 2023. This temporary cessation of service is necessary to facilitate the comprehensive transition to electric power.
According to Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, the Managing Director of LAMATA, it is imperative to suspend train operations in order to prioritize passenger safety throughout the transition to electric power. Additionally, she emphasizes the need to conduct the testing phase in a secure manner.
It is customary globally to temporarily halt passenger operations in the event of significant changes, such as the one we want to implement during the upcoming weekend. According to her statement, the implementation of the changeover will enable us to expand the number of trips and accommodate a larger number of people.
The inauguration of the passenger operation for the initial stage of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line was conducted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on September 4, 2023. Since then, the system has successfully transported more than 80,000 people.
According to projections, the daily volume of passenger movement between Marina and Mile 2 is expected to exceed 150,000 individuals in the upcoming months.
