Furthermore, the neglect of the bulk of dams that were completed over four decades ago by successive governments has resulted in their defective condition. This situation has the potential to undermine food security inside the country.
The current administration has made significant efforts to address the deteriorating condition of the dams in the state, as highlighted by Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf. These efforts aim to restore the irrigation system to adequately cater to the agricultural and human requirements of the people.
The Governor of Kano State, Gov. Yusuf, disclosed this information through his deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam, during a courtesy visit by Professor Joseph Terlumum Utsev, the Minister of Water and Sanitation, at the government house in Kano.
The governor alluded to the efforts made by his government to revive the diverse water infrastructure and irrigation systems in order to mitigate the severe shortage of potable water.
The Governor has highlighted the positive outcomes resulting from the ongoing efforts, such as increased agricultural yields and improved access to potable water for 55% of the population. Nevertheless, the Governor emphasized that the condition of the dams in Kano continues to pose a significant risk to food security within the state.
Successive administrations in Kano have implemented the construction of around 21 dams with the aim of enhancing irrigated farming. This initiative seeks to facilitate year-round agricultural activities, foster empowerment within the agricultural value chain, and address the provision of potable water for drinking purposes.
However, the majority of these dams exhibit not only advanced age but also significant technical and structural deficiencies. Despite our efforts to carry out repairs using the means available to us, the complete restructuring of the Dams requires the intervention of the federal government.
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Utsev, underscored the dedication of the federal government to guaranteeing a sufficient water supply in order to enhance agricultural productivity and promote food security within the nation.
The Minister stated that he conducted a firsthand assessment of Federal government projects related to water in Kano. The purpose of this inspection was to identify the issues associated with access to water and to determine appropriate measures for reactivating these projects.
Our purpose is to evaluate the quality of work, particularly in relation to River Basin initiatives. The overarching objective is to enhance the organization's capabilities and secure additional financial resources for the project, so facilitating the efficient fulfillment of mandated obligations. We are also interested in establishing collaborative partnerships with state governments in the domain of irrigation, dam construction, and other water scheme management. The Minister made a statement.
