Residents said that the event took place in Nasarawa Quarters in Funtua at 9 p.m. when the deceased came from the police station where he had picked up his gun for nightly surveillance as one of the community security monitors the Katsina State government had just trained.
The late councillor's neighbor, Malam Musa Maibulo, claimed the robbers were apparently on a mission to kidnap someone nearby and claimed the deceased was an opportunity victim.
Nobody perceived any threat as we went about our daily lives, but unbeknownst to us, the criminals had entered our neighborhood and were waiting for the right moment to strike. In order to prepare for the regular night vigil, our councillor Samaila Buhari, who was also one of the community security monitors, went to the Makera Police division to pick up his firearm. Unfortunately, just as he was about to enter his house, the bandits noticed the gun he was hanging and started shooting at him.
Maibulo stated that after killing the councilman, the robbers took away the rifle.
"As soon as the gunshots ended, the bandits turned around and fled. However, once they made their getaway, we discovered that one of our neighbors, Malam Samaila Maikatako, had been kidnapped by them," he continued.
The late councillor's uncle, Abbas Ismail, stated that he was survived by his wife and eight children.
The prevalence of bandits in Funtua town is regrettable. They kidnapped Hajiya Fati Mai Waina, a well-known food vendor at Unguwar Dahiru along the Sokoto route, on August 13. She has not been released as of yet.
When contacted, ASP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, the police public relations officer for the Katsina State Police Command, stated that the incident report had been received while an investigation was ongoing.
