Gov. Kefas requests NAF intervention in Taraba due to unrest
Agbu Kefas, the governor of Taraba, has requested the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to intensify air interdiction and surveillance in order to eradicate criminal elements along the porous Nigeria-Cameroun border.

Kefas made the call while paying Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar a courtesy visit, according to a statement released on Saturday in Abuja by the NAF's director of public relations and information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet.

The governor was described in the release as stating that given the multiple security issues the state is facing, there is a need for enhanced engagement with NAF.

He acknowledged the crucial part played by the NAF, particularly in the northeast, in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations.

He believes that the NAF's air power capabilities offer the most effective way to stop terrorist and criminal activity in the northeast.

This, he claimed, required increased collaboration to stop criminal activity along the border, particularly in Taraba, and he urged NAF support to stop terrorists and bandits who were determined to make life difficult for the state's peace-loving citizens.

The governor also detailed his attempts to stop illegal mining in the state as well as his intentions to rehabilitate and modernize Jalingo's Suntai Airport.

Abubakar was also mentioned in the statement praising the governor for his developmental endeavors, particularly his plans to reform agriculture in light of the state's abundant fertile land.

Abubakar also praised Kefas' educational and skill-development programs, saying that the initiative will give young people job possibilities and lower crime.

Abubakar praised the governor for his efforts to upgrade and reopen the Jalingo airport, saying that this would enable NAF platforms to function and improve their activities in Taraba and elsewhere, attract investors, and let domestic flights to resume.

The CAS also praised the state's ban on mining operations, stating that by putting an end to unlawful mining, the state would be able to tap into the wealth that lies beneath its surface.

Furthermore, he asserted that lawful mining operations will deter criminal activity because it is now well established that unlawful mining operations are closely related to terrorism and banditry.

Regarding the security issues at the border with Cameroun, Abubakar stated that the state of Taraba and the entire country were at risk due to the state's extensive and porous border with the Republic of Cameroun, which spans roughly 107 kilometers.

He gave the people his word that NAF will work with the Taraba government to patrol the extensive border while also inspiring confidence in them to prosper.

In the statement, Abubakar said, "Rest assured of NAF's full cooperation and assistance till you are successful in bringing the benefits of democracy to your people.
