German tells court about how "Yahoo boy" duped him of £130,000.
Petra Goschenhofer, a German citizen, provided testimony before Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon of the Federal High Court in Abuja regarding a purported romance scammer who she claims deceived her out of a sum of £130,000.

According to a statement by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Wilson Daphey, alternatively known as Jeffrey Guiseppe, is being charged with offenses related to fraudulent acquisition of funds and money laundering. Additionally, his associates Evans Nnamdi Aguh, Christopher Chinedu Ajufo, Ifeanyi Enuma, and Ojinanaka Kingsley Chukwuma, who are currently evading arrest, are also implicated in these charges.

During the proceedings on Friday, October 6, Goschenhofer informed the court about her encounter with Daphey on Instagram in 2008. She stated that he represented himself as a Bitcoin trader and a building engineer residing in the United States, with ancestral ties to Italy. Additionally, he informed her of his status as a single parent, responsible for the care of two children.

According to her account, their initial conversations revolved around their professional pursuits and personal backgrounds. Over time, she developed romantic feelings for him, and as their relationship progressed, Daphey purportedly started soliciting financial assistance for other purposes, including the clearance of construction equipment in Dubai.

Subsequently, he expressed his affection towards me, to which I disclosed my marital status and parental responsibilities, thereby asserting the impracticability of pursuing a romantic involvement. However, I gradually discerned his consistent display of kindness towards me during a period when I was grappling with personal turmoil, characterized by a distressed marriage, emotional despondency, and the deteriorating health of my son. According to Goschenhofer, there was a steady development of affection towards him, which eventually led to his solicitation for financial assistance.

The individual asserted that his construction equipment was being detained in Dubai and requested financial assistance to resolve the situation. The individual in question made a verbal commitment to reimburse me within a specified timeframe. Additionally, they provided me with visual documentation, including counterfeit passports and work permits, including the likeness of an American citizen called Jeffery Guiseppe, whose date of birth is recorded as October 11, 197. Subsequently, we engaged in a formalized contractual arrangement that he transmitted."

According to Goschenhofer, she transferred money to Daphey via Western Union and he assured her of repayment within a specified timeframe.

Following a certain duration, the individual in question expressed that she had requested the return of her funds. However, Daphey informed her that he had encountered difficulties in resolving the matter due to his bank account being subjected to a freeze. Consequently, he implored her assistance in covering the subsequent price. The total sum of £13,000 was paid by her.

In a separate occurrence, he communicated to me that he was experiencing illness and was in a state of unconsciousness within a medical facility. At now, I was engaged in a conversation with an individual named Mr. Bah, who initiated contact with me via the messaging application WhatsApp. The individual informed me that Guiseppe's life may be in jeopardy, necessitating the necessity for a surgical intervention, which I subsequently provided financial support for.

Subsequently, Goschenhofer made the decision to initiate an inquiry into the true identity of Daphey. Eventually, she disclosed this matter to her spouse, who subsequently reported it to the police for further investigation. The authorities subsequently discovered that the phone number provided by Daphey was linked to a server located in Singapore, and that the address and passport information provided were all fraudulent.

According to the police, conducting an investigation in this matter would pose significant challenges due to the limitations imposed by German law on investigations conducted beyond European borders. The aforementioned statement was made by the individual in question.

Goschenhofer additionally recounted her experience of actively seeking assistance by connecting with a group of women on Instagram who shared similar narratives, collectively endeavoring to devise strategies for mutual support. During the period of the Covid-19 pandemic, Goschenhofer reported that she had engaged in a video call with a someone named Guiseppe, during which she discerned that he did not possess American nationality. Subsequently, Guiseppe expressed remorse and disclosed his Kenyan ororigi.

The individual expressed that they subsequently initiated more communication by means of phone calls and video transmissions, sharing chats and various documents with an official stationed at the German consulate in Kenya. The purpose of this exchange was to ascertain the identity of an individual referred to as "Daphey." The embassy official conveyed that the linguistic characteristics exhibited by Daphey indicated his Nigerian origin.

According to Goschenhofer, more investigations were undertaken, leading to the discovery of the individual's true identity on both Facebook and Instagram platforms. During one of their video conversations, the user discovered that Daphey was operating a motor vehicle displaying a license plate from Nigeria.

She stated that she made the decision to print and dispatch all the evidence in the form of images and documents to the EFCC, with the intention of facilitating additional investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.

According to her statement, all relevant documentation, including photographs, passports, work permits, and receipts, were presented and accepted as evidence by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Nigeria.

The presiding judge, Justice Olajuwon, has decided to postpone the proceedings till Tuesday, October 10 in order to facilitate the cross-examination process.
