FG stops Makoko and other areas' social registration verification
The verification process of individuals under the National Social Register (NSR) has been initiated by the federal government in communities across Lagos and the South Western states. This is being done to confirm the accuracy of the existing data in preparation for government's poverty alleviation interventions, such as cash transfers.


The commencement of the activity was initiated by Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. This event took place in Lagos state, with the anticipation that it would occur concurrently nationwide.


The speaker expressed confidence in the government's ability to accurately collect data, ensuring the successful achievement of the aims outlined in the intervention. It was further stated that the duration of the exercise will span a period of three weeks.


The federal government intends to allocate funds to Nigerian households in order to support various aspects of their lives, including their businesses, livelihoods, and education. This financial assistance aims to enable households to cover expenses such as school fees for their children, enhance access to social services, subsidize transportation costs, and provide them with the means to address basic healthcare needs. Additionally, this initiative seeks to promote job creation and bolster the overall spending power of households.


In order to proceed with this endeavor, it is imperative to authenticate the National Social Register. The President has granted approval for us to engage in an extensive assessment at the grassroots level, with the aim of ensuring that the National Social Register accurately represents individuals who are genuinely impoverished.


Dr. Edu emphasized the necessity of verifying the eligibility of those on the list, namely those who live below the poverty line of one dollar and ninety-five cents per day and are impacted by multidimensional poverty. It is crucial to ensure that only those really in need of assistance are included, while those who do not meet the criteria should be excluded from the register.


In her address following the completion of a door-to-door verification exercise of the register in Makoko, a secluded suburb of Lagos, the minister expressed the federal government's commitment to providing financial support to Nigerian citizens for the purposes of bolstering their entrepreneurial endeavors, facilitating their children's education, sustaining their livelihoods, and fostering employment opportunities.


As to her assertion, the activity might be classified as an integrity assessment.President Bola Tinubu advocates for the implementation of a transparent and genuine selection process for the recipients of conditional cash transfers. He aspires to genuinely impact the lives of individuals experiencing poverty and effect positive change.


According to her statement, individuals who were apprehended will undergo an evaluation process to determine their eligibility for inclusion in the registry. Additionally, any areas that were omitted will be addressed and included.


According to her statement, the organization is implementing both community targeting and geographical targeting strategies. It has been seen that specific regions within Oko Agbon, Adogbo, Migbewhe, Makoko, Sogunro, and Apollo villages have been reached by NSR. However, there are still areas that have not been included in the coverage, and efforts will be made to include them.


The operations that will commence at this location are being implemented nationwide, in collaboration with several states and towns. The steering committee at the state level will be led by the State Governors, while the participation of Local Government Areas and Community Leaders will be sought to ensure the implementation of NSR with integrity.


The speaker expressed the desire to guarantee that the recipients of the funds are exclusively those who genuinely require it, without any involvement of political, social, or personal factors.


According to Abdulaziz Danladi, the National Coordinator for the National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), the enhancement of the social safety nets and social protection system inside the nation is a fundamental approach to effectively combat severe poverty and foster inclusive economic growth.


According to a statement issued by Rasheed Zubair, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the minister, Danladi clarified that the primary objective of NASSCO is to establish a solid basis for comprehensive and credible data on impoverished and marginalized households in Nigeria, a cause that the minister is actively advocating for.
