Engineers want promoters of failed buildings tried
The Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (NistructE) has called for the punishment of those who promote collapsed structures in order to address the problem of frequent collapses.

The institution's president, Peter IgbiniJesu, made the statement yesterday while speaking to reporters at the institution's annual conference, which is taking place today in Lagos. He emphasized that if the government does not punish promoters for incompetence, the problem of structural collapse will endure.

He grieved the loss of lives and property as a result of the threat's transformation into a monstrous force.

IgbiniJesu argued that government must take action beyond simply seizing the damaged structures and charge and imprison those responsible.

He claimed that the unsavory situations were primarily caused by the lack of utilization of licensed professionals.

The two-day conference, with the title "Emerging Tasks for Structural Engineering Practice in Nigeria," according to the speaker, would provide a forum for experts in the built environment to exchange knowledge, ideas, and best practices in the constantly expanding field of structural engineering.

The head of NistructE noted that the conference, which will be officially opened by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, would promote collaboration, inspire fresh thinking, and equip structural engineers to take on difficult problems by exchanging experiences and ensuring the resilience of the country's built sector.

Dr. Kehinde Osifala, the body's immediate past president, also said that the lack of prosecution of individuals responsible for the unwholesome development was the reason why the judicial process was moving so slowly.

He applauded the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria's (COREN) new regulation, which is intended to solve building failures and prevent property damage and human fatalities, but he regretted that it does not provide for criminal punishment of offenders. Osifala sought collaboration between structural engineers and pertinent government bodies in order to achieve more fruitful outcomes.
