The body specifically encouraged commercial drivers to always be extra cautious and to obey traffic laws when they are on the road.
The warning was given by the FRSC on Thursday in Ilorin at Maraba Motor Park during a sensitization lecture titled "Speed Thrills but Kills, Drive Responsibly and Avoid Overloading."
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the program aimed to inform and involve drivers on safe driving practices that could avert accidents. It was held annually.
ACM Hyginus Omeje, the FRSC's Zonal Commander, stated that speeding is one of the main reasons for accidents and that there should be a 30-meter gap between cars on the road.
The zonal commander stated that the suggested spacing between moving vehicles is to avoid accidents in the event of an unexpected braking situation. Mr. Sadiq Ibrahim, Zonal Head of Operation, represented the zonal commander in this regard.
He said it would be crucial in an emergency for drivers to always have a backup driver, especially for commercial drivers who travel significant distances on a daily basis.
Long periods of sitting still while driving can cause fatigue, cramps, and exhaustion, which makes it difficult for the driver to maintain complete control over the car.
"To be able to rest and be strong enough to control the vehicle, there is a need for rest during driving, especially long distances," he stated.
Before starting any travel, the zonal commander advised drivers to familiarize themselves with their route and the state of the road so they can plan their route safely and avoid collisions.
According to NAN, several associations representing commercial drivers expressed gratitude for the initiative and pledged to keep informing their members about safe driving practices and preventative measures.
Corps Commander Fredrick Ogidan, the FRSC's Kwara Sector Commander, cautioned drivers against overloading and speeding in order to prevent collisions.
"The loads in the car almost always contribute to the cause of the accident and even make it more difficult to rescue accident victims when an accident occurs.
He stated, "We recognize that a lot of people travel during the winter months, but it's important to understand the weight restrictions that apply to vehicles and that other loads should be sent and delivered later."
In the person of Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr. John Olanrewaju, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara advised motorists to comply with FRSC officers and drive cautiously.
He gave drivers advice on how to drive more cautiously and at a slower pace while keeping in mind their family back home, who are always waiting for them.
According to NAN, a large number of drivers and their unions attended the event, including members of the Nigeria Police Force, the Association of Independent Transporters (AIT), and the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
