Boat capsizes in Niger with 22 people on board—NSEMA
A maritime incident occurred whereby a vessel, transporting approximately 22 individuals, encountered a capsizing event during its journey from Kasabu hamlet in Agwara local government area of Niger to Yauri in Kebbi.


On Monday, Alhaji Salihu Garba, who is responsible for overseeing the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), revealed this information to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna.


According to his statement, the agency was informed of a report on the occurrence of a boat accident on Monday, specifically between the hours of 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.


As per the account provided by an individual who survived the incident, it was said that the boat was carrying approximately 22 passengers.


According to the individual, the ongoing search and rescue operations are being conducted by local divers and boat owners, with the agency's desk officer in Agwara overseeing the process.


According to his statement, no passengers have been successfully located thus far, and he further mentioned that the incident occurred on a day when the Yauri market was active.


Garba asserted that the declaration of missing relatives by families would only be possible subsequent to the market.


The individual provided an explanation indicating that it typically requires approximately 24 hours for a submerged individual to resurface on the water's surface.


The individual ascribed the occurrence of the incident to the presence of water hyacinth in conjunction with the forceful nature of the waves.
