Army launches Bayelsa security operation
In order to combat pipeline vandalism, cultism, illegal oil refining, kidnapping, and other crimes in Bayelsa, the Nigerian Army has started a security operation with the codename Exercise Still Waters III.

The exercise was launched on Tuesday in Otuokpoti, the state's Ogbia Local Government Area, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Gov. Douye Diri of Bayelsa praised the military for the exercise in his speech and emphasized the importance of security for good administration.

The military's efforts to reduce crime and criminality in the state were also commended by Diri, who urged them to keep up their proactive efforts to make the state a safe place for everyone.

In order to maintain calm in Bayelsa, Diri promised security organizations the backing of the state government.

He praised the Chief of Army Staff for continuing the exercise and claimed that the success of earlier security drills had greatly contributed to the state's calm holiday season.

In our state, as we are all aware, the ember months are a time when crime is more prevalent.

"In order to stop criminal activity, as well as, more critically, to prepare for the governorship race, apparatus must be put in place.

"Since taking office, I have prioritized our citizens' security, as this is the foundation of successful governance. I have made sure that our people close both of their eyes while they sleep.

"I appreciate the sacrifices and commitment of our gallant forces, which have helped reduce crime in our state," he continued.

Maj.-Gen. Jamal Abdussalam, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Nigerian Army, stated in his remarks that the exercise would concentrate on important facets of cyber warfare to fight false information spread on social media.

The GOC further stated that it will address further security issues that arose at the year's conclusion.

He affirmed that members of the Nigerian Army were prepared to sacrifice everything for the country's security and stability.

Abdussalam praised the commanders of various security formations for their involvement in and support of the state's efforts to uphold peace and security.

Brig.-Gen. Sadisu Yakassai, commander of the 16th Brigade of the Nigerian Army, had earlier stated that the exercise was intended to address all security issues in Bayelsa and that all key parties within the security architecture were involved.

He said that the exercise was designed to deter criminal activity, including pipeline sabotage, cultism, illegal oil refining, and kidnapping.

The commander continued by saying that it was also planned to get the troops ready for the governor's election on November 11.

According to NAN, the inauguration included a gunboat show demonstrating the military's ability to combat any security threat as well as a free medical outreach program for Otuokpoti people.
