Alleged rights violation: NLC to stage large-scale demonstrations in Imo
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said that it would start protesting in Imo State on November 1st in response to claims that the state administration had violated and abused workers' rights and privileges.

This was stated by NLC President Joe Ajaero during a press conference on Sunday in Abuja.

According to Ajaero, "the State Government's flagrant and ongoing violations of the rights and privileges of workers in Imo State deeply concerned the NLC."

"The Imo State Government has turned into a habitual and serial violator of these agreements, continuing to trample on the rights of workers in the state, despite our repeated efforts to engage in constructive dialogue and reach amicable agreements."

Consequently, we have no option but to start large-scale demonstrations and work stoppages on November 1, 2023.

He declared, "This is to show our outrage and put an end to the ongoing violations of the rights and privileges of workers in the state."

The state government's refusal to carry out prior agreements, according to the NLC president, made the demonstration necessary.

He claims that the administration has frequently broken agreements, most notably the one that the government and organized labor signed on January 9, 2021.

Surprisingly, some employees have been denied pay for an astounding 20 months due to unpaid salary arrears, all while being falsely accused of being "ghost workers."

Unfair designation of employees as "ghost workers," Around 11,000 industrious people have unfairly been labeled as "ghost workers," with their pay withheld even as they faithfully performed their jobs, he added.

In response to the vandalism of the NLC State Secretariat, he stated that it was a flagrant assault on workers' rights and a breach of the sacredness of their representative body.

The head of the NLC listed non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage, unpaid gratuity arrears, and the introduction of discriminatory pay as additional issues.

In light of these heinous breaches, the Nigeria Labour Congress calls on all parties involved, especially civil society organizations, to support the workers of Imo State.

We beg the Imo State Government to fulfill its duties and make a fresh commitment to upholding the rights and benefits of laborers.

"We will keep taking this course of action until the desired change occurs as long as it refuses. We are prepared for industrial peace in the state, but the Imo State administration has last say over the matter," he declared.

Additionally, he claimed that regrettably, the government has used its authority to use the state's strong and coercive powers against labor unions.

Ajaero also forewarned the Imo State administration that should anything happen to a worker or trade union leader during the legal protests, the NLC would hold the governor responsible.

"We take note of all the threats of violence against our persons that we have received, but we will not back down.

"We started this march on November 1st to protect Imo State workers from the terrible abuse the government has been putting them through for the past few years," he declared.
