At least 17 people have died and 73 more are missing following a boat accident in Taraba State, Nigeria, according to a Monday announcement from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The tragedy happened in the Karim Lamido LGA town of Mayo Ranewo on Sunday, October 29. When the boat overturned, 104 people were on board.
The Yola efforts Office of NEMA said that it promptly initiated search and rescue efforts upon receiving a report of the incident from the Taraba State Emergency Management Agency (TSEMA).
As of Monday, 73 passengers were still missing, 14 passengers had been saved, and 17 dead remains had been found.
With the assistance of local divers, NEMA said that the search for the remaining passengers is still on.
It further stated, "NEMA, TSEMA, and other stakeholders are coordinating the operation."
