Wedding destroyed by fire; nearly 100 people die in Qaraqosh
The occurrence of a fire incident at a wedding celebration has resulted in the unfortunate loss of life for more than one hundred attendees, while an additional 150 individuals have sustained injuries.

The aforementioned solemn event transpired in Nineveh province, the most populous Christian town in Iraq, within a time that was anticipated to be a festive celebration.

The precise origin of the fire remains undetermined, although there have been rumors indicating that pyrotechnics may have served as the catalyst for the conflagration. The conflagration swiftly consumed the establishment as a result of the presence of combustible panels, leading to the structural failure of sections of the ceiling.

The civil defence directorate of Iraq expressed concern on the utilization of inexpensive building materials that possess high flammability. These materials exhibited rapid deterioration mere minutes after the fire commenced. The ultimate outcome of the union between the bride and husband remains unclear.

The duo was observed engaging in a dance routine shortly before incendiary fragments descended upon the area where they were performing. The courageous firefighters diligently conducted search operations amidst the debris in order to locate those who may have survived.

Numerous individuals who were there at the scene vividly recounted the distressing events that unfolded during the evening when a substantial number of attendees became confined within the premises as the conflagration commenced at approximately 22:45 in accordance with the local time zone. In his testimonial, Imad Yohana, a survivor, provided a vivid account of the disordered environment, characterizing the fire as "pulsating" and highlighting the profound repercussions experienced by individuals who faced challenges in their attempts to evacuate.

Rania Waad, an individual who had burns to her hand, recounted her harrowing encounter, wherein the ignition of fireworks resulted in the outbreak of a fire as the bride and groom were engaged in a slow dance. The entire hall rapidly transformed into a conflagration, resulting in people being bewildered and struggling to breathe.

The testimonial of a sole survivor provided a distressing narrative of the arduous quest to locate family members who were unaccounted for within the tumultuous circumstances, resulting in the heart-wrenching loss of cherished individuals in the catastrophic incident.

In light of this calamity, the President of Iraq conveyed his condolences through social media platforms and urged for collective endeavors to provide assistance to the impacted individuals. The prime minister made a commitment to carry out thorough building inspections and closely examine safety protocols, with the aim of ensuring accountability for those found responsible.

The precise count of casualties remains indeterminate, as there are conflicting reports. The deputy governor of Nineveh officially verified a total of 113 dead, although the Red Crescent humanitarian organisation approximated the overall number of casualties to be approximately 450.

The toll's potential increase is anticipated by regional authorities.

The injured individuals who managed to survive were brought to several hospitals located within the Nineveh region. Additionally, a significant number of individuals voluntarily donated blood in order to provide assistance to their fellow compatriots. The urban center of Mosul, which continues to contend with the consequences of the occupation by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), encountered difficulties in effectively addressing the situation as a result of inadequate logistical resources.

Qaraqosh, formerly recognized as the most populous Christian settlement in Iraq, saw a distressing historical period when it succumbed to the control of ISIS in 2014, resulting in a significant displacement of its inhabitants and the onset of widespread persecution. Despite its liberation, the town is still in the process of reconstruction, with a significant number of homes yet to be restored.
