The Nigerian Army disputes claims that soldiers' allowances were diverted.
Allegations of corruption and the misappropriation of soldiers' Ration Cash Allowance, or RCA, have been denied by the Nigerian Army High Command.

The claims apparently came from soldiers stationed in Niger State to protect Chinese workers at the ongoing Zungeru Hydro Electricity Dam Project.

The Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, issued a statement on behalf of the Nigerian Army denying the claims.

The troops claimed that their former General Officer Commanding Major General Alabi and Brigadier General Jamiu Jimoh had failed to pay them their RCA for three months.

"We wish to state unequivocally that, under the leadership of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the welfare of troops takes a premium place amongst other important schemes and considerations, as it is one of the vital pillars of his Command Philosophy," the statement read.

Contrary to the allegations, preliminary research showed that the Nigerian Army has always paid its troops stationed at the Chinese Company in Niger State in installments upon receiving the necessary monies from the relevant institution, according to Nwachukwu.

"In light of this, the last RCA payment made by the impacted institution for the deployed troops expired on February 28, 2023.

"Army Headquarters has paid the troops covering the period 1 March - 30 June 2023 in a bid to ameliorate the operating conditions of the troops and keep them at par with deployments elsewhere," the statement continued. "While the next tranche of payment is being processed."

The statement also said that provisions had been made to feed the troops every day, as has become customary, to lessen the impact of the tranche system of payment.

The Nigerian Army, according to Nwachukwu, has zero tolerance for any type of money embezzlement and is vehemently opposed to any action that may lower military morale.
