The Minister wants to completely revamp Nigeria's higher education system.
According to Professor Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, it is imperative to completely revamp Nigeria's higher education system in order to align the country's universities and other tertiary institutions with global standards.

Mamman made this statement in Abuja on Wednesday during the inauguration of the 8th edition of the "Libsense" Open Science Symposium. The central focus of the symposium revolves around the theme of "Advancing Open Science and Collaboration: The role of Stakeholders."

The issues faced by higher education institutions in the country were highlighted by Mrs. Rakiya Ilyasu, the Director of University Education, who represented the minister.

Higher education is an educational system that aims to cultivate a skilled workforce to contribute to the overall progress and advancement of a nation in terms of its societal, economic, and technological dimensions.

Unfortunately, the higher education sub-sector is afflicted by numerous obstacles, including insufficient funding, corruption, inadequate infrastructure, a shortage of academic personnel, frequent strikes, brain drain, limited research capabilities, weak governance, and insecurity, among other issues.

The speaker expressed the opinion that a comprehensive reform is necessary for the higher education sector in Nigeria in order to bring Nigerian universities and other tertiary institutions on par with global standards.

According to the minister, President Bola Tinubu exhibits a strong resolve to tackle the prevailing issues within the education sector.
