The decision was announced by the organization through a press release on Monday in Lokoja. The statement was jointly signed by Dr. Ugoh Stanley Nkemakolam, the State Chairman, and Dr. Okundaye Benson, the Secretary.
It is worth noting that the Nigerian Association of General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP) in Kogi State expressed their appeal to the State Government during a press conference held on June 23. Their requests included an increase in the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), hazard allowance, provision of financial support for promotions, recruitment of additional doctors, and the reinstatement of rural allowance for healthcare professionals working in rural areas. These appeals were made in order to alleviate the adverse impact of the economic conditions on the medical practitioners.
The group has highlighted that the purpose of the statement is to bring the difficulties currently experienced by its members to the notice of Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.
The authors argued that the existing compensation framework for doctors employed in the state public service is no longer in line with contemporary economic conditions, particularly in light of the elimination of fuel subsidies.
The association emphasized the need for the state government to promptly implement measures to maintain the longstanding cooperative relationship between the State government and its members, who play a crucial role in providing clinical services throughout the state.
The association expressed its acknowledgement of the efforts made by His Excellency, while also appealing to him to fulfill the five-point requests of its members. This is seen as a means of providing encouragement to those few individuals who have remained loyal to him notwithstanding the challenges faced during the ongoing issue of medical brain drain.
