I received jeers for returning N15m that the passenger had left behind.

 Auwalu Salisu, a 22-year-old commercial Keke rider, claims that other community members and friends made fun of him for returning N15 million in cash that a tricycle passenger had left behind.

The event took place in the Haye Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, where a Chadian passenger who had been transported by Salisu in his Keke forgot a bag carrying the money.

When the commercial tricyclist gave the owner his money back, many people were startled.

Salisu, a dropout from school, has been praised and given gifts for returning the money.

Salisu claimed, however, that almost all of his friends made fun of him, with the exception of a select few who applauded him for acting honorably, when speaking while accepting a monetary award of N100,000 from the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, for his candor.

The trike rider described what transpired, claiming that on Thursday, he transported three people from Badawa to Kano's Yan Kaba Motor Park.

However, he later found a bag inside the trike when washing the Keke.

He continued, "When I checked, it was full of cash."

"I immediately hurried home to see my mum. Wads of foreign money were present. My mother informed my father right away, who then told his older brother.

"When they arrived at the house, they decided we should wait until the owner announced it before announcing we had found the money on the radio."

Salisu claims that two days after leaving the cash with his mother, she heard on Arewa Radio FM in Kano about the missing cash and noted the phone numbers provided to get in touch with the owners.

I dialed their numbers five times after gathering their numbers, but no one picked up. The other number was picked up on my third call when I dialed it. During our conversation, I identified myself as the tricyclist who had carried the individual on Thursday.

"He was content and made plans to meet at the Arewa Radio where the lost money was reported. They were pleased when we met them there. My donation was N400,000.

"I did that for God's sake. My friends even chastised me. They claimed I was crazy for returning so much money.

Salisu advised his friends and other young people to follow his lead, despite the fact that he said he was made fun of for returning the money.

I urge my fellow young people to follow in my footsteps and always act honestly, he stated.

Salisu received the monetary gift from Dr. Gwani Umar Farouk, Chairman of ACF in Kano, who also noted that the organization chose to honor Salisu because it wanted to set a good example for other Nigerians.

Despite the financial difficulties he is experiencing, the tricyclist showed the utmost level of honesty by returning the money to the owner, in Farouk's opinion.

Farouk declared, "It's not the money; it's the recognition ACF gave him. Given that he repaid the money despite facing financial difficulties, this youngster has truly displayed the highest level of honesty.

"To serve as a lesson and an example to his friends and young people in the country, ACF would not only donate money to him but also involve him in its activities."

The Keke rider has also improved Kano and Nigeria's integrity in the eyes of Chad and the rest of the globe, according to Farouk, who also said that Salisu's move demonstrates that there is still hope in Nigerian young.
