Gunmen in Osun shoot a farmer, 28, to death over a land dispute as a potential communal conflict grows.
After unidentified shooters killed Sodiq Alamu, a 28-year-old farmer, on disputed territory, a communal crisis between Ilobu and Ifon-Orolu of Osun State is imminent.

Ilobu in the Irepodun local government area and Ifon in the Orolu local government area of Osun state are rumored to have been at odds with one another over a plot of land.

The Ilobu community reportedly sounded the alarm approximately two weeks ago, stating that Ifon-Orolu was preparing to wreck havoc in several areas of the disputed land in the Opapa region.

The Ilobu community revealed that Sodiq of Aganna's compound, Ilobu, was assassinated by unidentified gunmen on his farm near the Opapa section of the community on Friday, September 15, 2023, through the Public Relations officer of the Ilobu-Asake Development Union, Tairu Babatunde.

"Eesa of Ifon-Osun, Babatunde Oyetunji, and a Prince of Ifon-Osun, Jide Akinyooye, have finally followed out their threats by assassinating Sodiq of Aganna's, an Ilobu native. The corpse has been retrieved by a squad of police officers under the command of Divisional Police Officer Ilobu. We request that the two be taken into custody," he said.

The Osun State Police Command has meantime urged the citizens of Ilobu, Ifon, to maintain their composure.

In a statement released on Saturday, September 16, the command's spokesperson, SP Opalola Yemisi Olawoyin, reassured the public that an investigation into Alamu's homicide was in progress.

"The Osun State Police Command is using this medium to inform the good people of the State, in particular, the residents of Ilobu and Ifon in Irepodun and Orolu local governments area that the Police Command is aware of the report of the incident of the death of one Sodiq Alamu about 28 years of age along Opapa village in Ilobu and, as a result, passionately appeals to the residents of both communities (Ilobu & Ifon) and its environs to

Additionally, the Command is aware of covert gatherings being hosted by some people or groups of people in order to wreak havoc in the neighborhoods.

Since the incident was reported, "CP Patrick Kehinde Longer, Commissioner of Police, has met with Oba Ashiru Olaniyan, Olobu of Ilobu, and other pertinent stakeholders to appeal to their subjects to maintain peace and not to use force, as the Police Command will not relent until the circumstances are clarified and suspect (s) are brought to book."
