In an interview with newsmen in Abeokuta, Mrs. Florence Okpe, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, verified the event.
Okpe stated that the collision involved a DAF truck with the registration number KMC 810 ZB, a Toyota bus with the registration number TMA-244b XA, and a Mitsubishi pickup van with no registration.
According to the FRSC spokeswoman, the truck driver's excessive speeding, tyre blowout, and loss of control were to blame for the collision, which happened at around 6:15 a.m.
The vehicle crashed and obstructed the road as a result of the tyre blowout and loss of control, she said, adding that the pickup van and bus collided with the downed truck.
Okpe said there were 21 people engaged in the multiple collision, 12 of whom were hurt, and five of whom died.
She claimed that the deceased were transferred to a morgue in the Ipara community, close to Abeokuta, while the injured were taken to Victory Hospital in Ogere, close to Abeokuta for medical care.
According to Okpe, Mr. Anthony Uga, the FRSC's Ogun State Sector Commander, advised drivers to avoid using subpar tires and to drive safely during this rainy season.
The sector commander expressed sympathy to the relatives of the victims and suggested that they contact the FRSC's Ogunmakin Unit for additional details on the incident.
