Assembly in Akwa Ibom withdraws legislation requiring council chairmen to live in their LGAs
The measure that mandated local government area Chairmen in Akwa Ibom State to reside inside their respective local governments throughout their tenure has been rescinded by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

The Bill was scheduled for a second reading before being withdrawn during Tuesday's plenary session.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong, issued a directive for the bill to be withdrawn after a resolution to that effect was proposed by the Deputy Leader of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Otobong Effiong Bob, and supported by the Chief Whip, Rt. Hon. Effiong Johnson, during the plenary session in Uyo.

Despite the absence of any justifications from the lead sponsor, Mr. Bob, regarding the withdrawal of the Bill, it is noteworthy that three further executive measures managed to go to the second reading stage during the House proceedings.

The aforementioned items encompass the following: "A proposed legislation aimed at creating specific provisions for statutory boards in Akwa Ibom State, along with its associated objectives; HAB 310, which pertains to a proposed legislation seeking to establish the Akwa Ibom State Bureau of Statistics and Akwa Ibom State Statistical System, as well as address related matters; and finally, the HAB 312 bill, which aims to establish the Ibom Peace Corps and address matters connected to it."

The proposed legislation concerning statutory boards aims to formalize the legal recognition of various bodies, such as boards of commission, agencies, corporations, and other entities established by state laws.

This legislation intends to confer a certain level of corporate status upon these bodies. Similarly, the Bureau of Statistics bill aims to establish a bureau that would serve as the primary state agency responsible for the development and management of official statistics.

The Peace Corps Bill aims to form an organization that would serve as a supplementary entity to the existing security services within the State.

The legislation were forwarded by the Speaker to the appropriate House Committees for subsequent legislative action.
