Abdulkarim Ckukkol, the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), provided an elucidation on the strategies employed by the anti-corruption agency to effectively eliminate Nigeria's notorious reputation as a hub for fraudulent activities, particularly associated with the 419 scam.
Chukkol provided an explanation during the Passing out Parade of the 332 Detective Assistant Cadet Course 4/2023, which took place at the Nigeria Police Mobile Force Training College in Ende Hills, Akwanga, located in the state of Nasarawa.
Based on his assertions, the bad perception of Nigeria as a hub for fraudulent operations, namely associated with the 419 scam, and its consequential adverse impact on the economy, were effectively dispelled as a result of the investigative endeavors undertaken by the commission. Furthermore, he stated that these activities facilitated the retrieval of substantial assets valued at billions of Naira.
In addition to its enforcement actions, Chukkol observed that the commission diligently pursued its prevention mandate by engaging with all stakeholders in the battle against corruption, economic, and financial crimes, with unwavering determination to cleanse the system.
Acknowledging the significant impact of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during its two decades of operation, the speaker revealed that the commission achieved a remarkable milestone in 2022 by securing a total of 3785 convictions. This figure represents the highest number of convictions attained by any law enforcement agency in Nigeria within a single year. Furthermore, the speaker highlighted that between January and the present time, the EFCC has already achieved 1688 convictions.
According to Chukkol, it is anticipated that the figures would rise as other cases reach resolution within the judicial system.
In his address to the cadets, he emphasized the necessity of unwavering dedication to the chosen vocation. It is important to acknowledge that law enforcement, particularly in the realm of combating economic and financial crimes, represents a vital national endeavor. This profession necessitates a significant investment of time and effort to establish oneself, yet it can be jeopardized swiftly due to a single instance of thoughtless indiscretion or flawed decision-making.
In order to participate in this race and achieve your aspiration of becoming an EFCC officer, it is imperative that you always maintain focus and adhere to the core principles of the Commission, namely Integrity, Courage, Professionalism, and Collaboration.
It is imperative to emphasize that the Commission will not tolerate any form of indiscipline, as any breach of the established code of conduct will be dealt with suitable penalties. I extend my sincere wishes that you would maintain a commendable record throughout your professional endeavors, therefore bringing honor to your parents, the Commission, and the nation, which has made substantial investments in your education and development.
As per the statement made by the Chairman, the inclusion of fresh cadets into the EFCC is anticipated to enhance the endeavors of the commission in reinforcing the accomplishments of previous undertakings and solidifying its position as a leading law enforcement organization, not solely within Nigeria but on a global scale.
Based on the input received from the instructors, it is gratifying to observe that the cadets have demonstrated their capabilities, having undergone a transformative training process, and are now prepared to make meaningful contributions towards combating corruption.
