Tragically, two members of a religious congregation succumb in the Ogun River while participating in recreational swimming.

Two individuals tragically lost their lives due to drowning while engaging in a swimming activity within a river located in Itori, Ogun State. 

 

The individuals affected, along with an additional five individuals, had traveled from Lagos with the purpose of attending a ceremonial ceremony at Cherubim and Seraphim Church Onikoko in Itori, which took place on Sunday, August 27, 2023. 

 

The occurrence transpired on Monday, August 28th, when the individuals engaged in aquatic activities, oblivious to the potential hazards present. 

 

According to Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson of the State Police Command, the event was reported to the police by Adebayo Adeosun, a member of the church, at around 6:30 PM on Monday.

 

 According to Adeosun, a group of seven lads arrived from Lagos on August 27th to attend the church opening. Subsequently, they departed from the church premises to engage in swimming activities, resulting in their unfortunate drowning.

 

 The two victims, Femi Akinola and Tunde Falade, were identified by the PPRO. Femi Akinola, 32 years old, hails from Odo Eran Itire in Lagos State, while Tunde Falade, 35 years old, is from Kola Alagbado, also located in Lagos. 

 

The corpses were retrieved from the river and promptly transported to the Health Center located in Itori, where a qualified healthcare practitioner officially pronounced them died.

 

According to the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Olayemi Jacob, who spearheaded the investigation, first observations suggest the absence of any indications of malicious intent or physical aggression. 

 

Following that, the deceased individuals were transported to IFO General Hospital in order to undergo autopsy procedures and have since been placed within the hospital's mortuary.
