President Tinubu has responded to the recent coup in Gabon and has expressed strong disapproval of the move.
President Bola Tinubu has responded to the recent coup d'état in Gabon, which resulted in the removal of President Ali Bongo from power and his subsequent confinement to his residence.

It is important to note that certain members of the military had based their plan to overthrow the government of Bongo on perceived irregularities in the recent general election in the central African nation.

The officers have acknowledged that the organization of the general elections held on August 26, 2023, failed to achieve the necessary criteria for a transparent, credible, and inclusive electoral process, which was eagerly anticipated by the citizens of Gabon.

Furthermore, the authors of the report have also referenced the presence of irresponsible and unpredictable government, which has contributed to an ongoing decline in social cohesiveness. This situation poses a significant risk of plunging the nation into a state of disorder and turmoil.

In response to the matter, the Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Tinubu, Ajuri Ngelale, expressed the presidency's vigilance and apprehension on the seeming proliferation of authoritarian disputes in many regions of the continent.

Ngelale asserts that the President, through his personal sacrifices, has demonstrated a strong commitment to promoting and safeguarding democracy. The President firmly believes that authority should be entrusted to the capable hands of Africa's esteemed individuals, rather than relying on the use of force.

According to his statement, the President emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring a consistent adherence to constitutional mechanisms for resolving electoral disputes. He expressed the view that these principles should always be safeguarded in our continent.

In pursuit of this objective, the President is actively engaged in close collaboration and ongoing communication with fellow Heads of States within the African Union. The aim is to establish a comprehensive consensus regarding the subsequent course of action in Gabon, as well as to determine the continent's collective response to the concerning proliferation of autocratic regimes that has been observed across Africa.
