Niger Coup: Catholic bishops advise Tinubu that Nigerians can't be sacrificed and should embrace dialogue.

President Bola Tinubu has been urged by the catholic bishops of the Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province to keep Nigerians out of the fighting in the Niger Republic.

This information was included in a communiqué that the President, Most Rev. Gabriel Abegunrin, and Secretary, Most Rev. John Oyejola, signed at the conclusion of the two-day conference of the Catholic Bishops of Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province held in Ado-Ekiti.

The Catholic Bishops of Ibadan Archdiocese, Ilorin, Ondo, Oyo, Ekiti, and Osogbo Dioceses declared that there are already too many problems for Nigeria to deal with before engaging in any type of conflict.

They contend that in order to address the issues of insecurity and ensure that there are sustainable programs for food production, the government must take the matter more seriously.

They called on all levels of government to restore citizens' hope while urging Nigerians to maintain optimism in the face of formidable obstacles.

"Governments compromise their legitimacy when they don't uphold the democratic interests of the people.

"If the public's response to Nigeria's role in restoring democracy in Niger is any indication, one may conclude that the ECOWAS leaders' proposal for military intervention in Niger is quite unpopular.

"Nigerians favor negotiation and other non-military tactics, and President Bola Tinubu ought to listen to Nigerians before anyone else because he is first and foremost the president of Nigeria.

We urge the President and the National Assembly to stay out of the fighting in Niger since we already have too many problems at home.
