Lionel Messi, a former midfielder for Paris Saint-Germain, has been nominated for the 2022–23 UEFA Men's Player of the Year award alongside Man City teammates Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne.
In seven games for PSG last season, Messi contributed four goals and four assists as they were eliminated in the round of 16. In December 2022, he guided Argentina to victory at the World Cup.
On Wednesday, Erling Haaland scored the first goal in the Super Cup victory over Sevilla that ended in a 5-4 penalty shootout. As City won the Champions League for the first time in the club's history, the Norwegian scored 12 goals to finish the season as the league's leading scorer.
Belgium Kevin De Bruyne, a midfielder, also contributed significantly to City's win last year. The 31-year-old provided the 'Cityzens' with two goals and seven assists.
The UEFA Coach of the Year nominees included Simeone Inzaghi, Luciano Spalletti, and Pep Guardiola.
On August 31, the winners will be revealed at the UEFA Champions League draw.
