According to the Code of Conduct Bureau, it is illegal to conduct private business during work hours.
Suleiman Usman, the State Director of the FCT CCB, gave the warning on Thursday in Abuja during a one-day awareness drive.
He issued a warning that the bureau will take appropriate action against any employee who is accused of wasting work time for personal purposes, is subjected to an investigation by the agency's committee, and is found guilty.
Usman also advised Federal Capital Territory Administration employees to declare all of their assets in accordance with the code of conduct that governs public employment, as failure to do so could result in penalties.
He stated, "We are here to guarantee that we have complete compliance and to educate the public officials of the FCT Administration on the significance of asset declaration. We also informed them of the public officials' code of conduct so that they would be aware of the dos and don'ts in addition to their duties.
We emphasized that federal workers must not directly manage private business if they want to operate private firms since the Bureau has a committee that examines and takes the required action, he continued.
Usman reminded the employees that government offices are held in trust on behalf of the people and encouraged them to make sure their asset declarations are accurate and made on time for the sake of transparency and accountability.
Usman claims that as many public employees are still uninformed about some of the important information and behaviors expected of them, they unintentionally normalize criminal activities within the system.
Dr. Jummai Ahmadu, the FCTA's acting director of reform coordination and service improvement, said the bureau regularly conducts awareness campaigns across the nation to remind civil officials to declare their assets.
