The primary cause of the conflict between the neighboring nations stems from a contentious de facto boundary spanning approximately 3,440 kilometers (2,100 miles) along the Himalayas, commonly referred to as the Line of Actual Control (LAC). This border, characterized by inadequate demarcation, serves as the focal point for the ongoing tensions. The existence of rivers, lakes, and snowcaps might result in variations in the position of the line.
Soldiers from both factions frequently encounter each other at various locations, leading to the potential escalation of hostilities. A recent instance occurred in December, when Indian and Chinese military personnel engaged in a confrontation along the border in the town of Tawang.
China asserts a territorial claim to the entirety of Arunachal Pradesh, referring to it as "South Tibet," a designation that India vehemently disputes. India asserts its territorial rights over the Aksai Chin plateau located in the Himalayas, an area now under the jurisdiction of China.
The response from Delhi in April was characterized by a strong reaction over China's endeavor to rename 11 locations in Arunachal Pradesh. The Indian government firmly asserted that the state will perpetually be a "integral and inalienable part of India".
The bilateral relations between India and China have experienced a deterioration since the year 2020, following a tragic fight between their respective military forces in the Galwan valley located in the Ladakh region.
