In Edo, a soldier is slain as robbers steal a 'Ghana-Must-Go' bag full of cash from an army patrol truck.

In Benin City, Edo State, gunmen suspected of being robbers allegedly ambushed an army patrol van, killing one soldier in the process, and stole a "Ghana-Must-Go bag" thought to be filled with cash.

At around 2:10 p.m. on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, the gunmen ambushed three soldiers who were reportedly in a military vehicle traveling toward the Ikpoba-hill axis of the Benin city at the traffic lights along Akpakpava road, by First Junction.

According to Nigerian Tributne, the attackers drove an unmarked Toyota Camry in the color ash in the other direction of the flow of traffic in order to approach the army vehicle. Two of the four occupants then allegedly got out of the car and started shooting at the soldiers.

According to the account, the three troops fled in separate directions for safety as they abandoned their patrol car and the laden Ghana-must-go bag amid the barrage of gunfire.

According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers took the bag from the military patrol van, threw it into their running Toyota Camry, and then drove off like they were in a gangster movie.

However, it was impossible to determine whether the soldiers were armed and had their weapons snatched by the alleged robbers.

Some street vendors who saw the incident claim that many more people would have perished if the soldiers had the chance to retaliate against their assailants' bullets.

One of the three soldiers stumbled while fleeing; he attempted to stand up but was unable to since he was simply bleeding. Later, his other two coworkers appeared to greet him, but they couldn't do anything, the business owner claimed.

"Imagine a popular and busy Junction like this; the government cannot install security cameras to record whatever is going on here; it's unfortunate", a shop owner said.

A soldier was slain on Wednesday at about 2 p.m. when thugs ambushed a military patrol vehicle at the first Junction, Akpakpava Road, Benin City, according to SP Chidi Nwabuzor, a spokesman for the Edo State Police Command, who verified the event.

"Edo State Police Command can confirm that a military personnel was killed today (Wednesday) in Benin City," the PPRO said.

"A decent Nigerian reported the incident to the police station responsible for that area. The thieves stole a Ghana Must Go bag that was allegedly filled with cash and put inside the army van.

"They ought to be armed since they were in their police car. The information was used by the attackers. All of that will be revealed by the probe, according to SP Chidi Nwabuzor.
