Carney Chukwuemeka, a teenager for Chelsea, underwent surgery on the knee he hurt playing against West Ham last weekend, the Blues reported on Tuesday.
"Carney Chukwuemeka sustained an injury to his left knee during our game against West Ham United on Sunday," said a statement on the Chelsea website.
"Carney had surgery last night (Monday), and he is now starting to heal.
The club's medical staff will assist the 19-year-old in his Cobham recuperation.
Chukwuemeka, who netted his first goal for Chelsea in their 3-1 Premier League loss away to London rivals West Ham, is not expected to return for up to six weeks. There is no set timetable for his absence.
Following his £20 million ($26 million, 23 million euros) transfer, the former Aston Villa midfielder struggled to get first-team playing time last season.
However, Chukwuemeka has started each of Mauricio Pochettino's first two Premier League matches in command of Chelsea.
After being taken out of Chelsea's defeat at the London Stadium, Pochettino's first loss as Blues manager, 15 minutes before the game's conclusion, he underwent surgery.
He had earlier tied the game for Chelsea by cutting inside and beating goalkeeper Alphonse Areola with a ferocious right-footed drive after Nayef Aguerd's header.
Since moving to Stamford Bridge, he had made 17 appearances across all competitions before scoring.
After Chelsesa's Enzo Fernandez saw his penalty saved, the Hammers went on to win the game in the second half on goals from Michail Antonio and a penalty from Lucas Paqueta.
